EPIC HS South – Cell Phone Policy

Effective September 4, 2025

Epic High School South is a phone-free school. In compliance with Education Law §2803, students are not allowed to use or access personal internet-enabled electronic devices during the school day, from arrival until dismissal, including lunch.This policy supports academic success, emotional well being, and a focused learning environment for all students.

Devices Covered

  • Cell phones and smartphones
  • Smartwatches
  • Tablets and iPads
  • Portable entertainment/music systems
  • Laptops not issued by NYCPS

Safe Pouch Process

  • Turn off devices upon entry
  • Place devices in your Blue Safe Pouch and lock it in front of staff
  • Store the pouch in your backpack for the entire day
  • Unlock and retrieve devices at dismissal (3:15 PM)
  • Bring your pouch every day

Exceptions

  • Emergencies or safety concerns
  • Approved medical, IEP, or 504 accommodations
  • Teacher or administrator permission for learning activities
  • Student athletes before leaving for games
  • Seniors with early dismissal (verified by staff)

Emergency Communication

  • Parents may call Ms. Jones to reach students during the day.
  • Students may use the Main Office phone in Room 403.
  • Families should set up NYCSA accounts for GAMA emergency alerts.

Discipline

  • First offense: Device is held until the end of the day
  • Repeated offenses: Parent must pick up device
  • Continued refusal to follow the policy may result in further consequences (progressive discipline)

Lost or Damaged Pouches

  • Repair fee: $5
  • Replacement fee: $15
